This wall decoration design marked that devasatation and hardship encountered by the informal sector workers in Tonga during the COVID19 pandemic period 2020-2022 and the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga- Hapa'ai volcanic eruption recorded to be the most powerful in the world today in Tonga on the 15 January 2022.   The design is printed on tapa-cloth made from the bark of the mulberry (paper) tree, beatened & sundried.  It is handmade and colour is from clay and natural plant ink. 


Tapa or "ngatu" in Tongan was used 300 years ago to make clothes and blankets in Tonga.  Nowadays, they are only used for making as ceremonial gifts in weddings, funerals and national functions.  The size can be as long as 50-100 meters with traditional designs  such as weddings, funeral and national functions.
