This wall decoration mat is hand woven  and made from pandanus (kie) leaves, cooked, soaked for weeks in the sea and sundried.  It has a softer texture than the other pandana varieties.
 
"Kie" mats are used for ceremonies such as weddings as part of the wedding outfits called "ta'ovala" worn around the waist, or used as blankets (feta'u) in funerals.  They are also used as ceremonial gifts in weddings, funerals and national functions.  The size can be as long as 10-100 feet and 8 -10 feet wide.
